La delegación sueca llegó acompañada del frío nórdico y horas antes Madrid amanecía nevada. Desde primeras horas de la mañana, la ciudad se había vestido de azul para asistir a la entrega del testigo de la Presidencia europea, que durante los próximos seis meses ejercerá España. Y al caer la tarde, Madrid se iluminó de azul comunitario y desde su corazón surgió una llama compartida por el resto de ciudadanos continentales.

La inauguración oficial de la Presidencia española de la UE tuvo como escenario principal ese templo de la cultura noble que es el Teatro Real, una vez más presidido por los Reyes de España y los Príncipes de Asturias. Tras la toma de posesión presidencial por parte de José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, la venerable tarima se recogió para recibir la elegancia y belleza de dos grandes damas de la danza, Tamara Rojo y María Pagés. Y la coreografía de su baile español y euroepo se hizo universal.

La velada arrancó con el movimiento orgánico y racial de la sevillana, elevando la expresión del baile flamenco a la máxima categoría cultural. Su “Sol Soleá” dio pasó al movimiento sofisticado y atmosférico de la que hoy es primera bailarina del Royal Ballet de Londres, que citó, con manos y pies, a Bizet y Petit, al interpretar la ópera “Carmen” junto a Lienz Chang, primer bailarín del Ballet Nacional de Cuba.

Himno y cielo europeos

El ecuador del recital se enmarcó entre un número de percusión flamenca y la “Seguiriya de la amargura” de la Compañía María Pagés, que fue otro desafío a la belleza y a la emoción desnuda. Y entonces apareció Tamara Rojo junto al bailarín Romel Frómeta, para certificar, bailando el “Don Quijote” de Marius Petipa, que aquella hermosura era de carne y hueso, aunque pareciera cosa de Dioses.

La temperatura emocional del Teatro Real crecía en grados desde la platea y, afuera, la ciudad aguardaba un desenlace todavía más emocionante. El Coro Nacional de España interpretó las primeras notas del “Himno europeo” y, sobre el escenario, Tamara Rojo y María Pagés abrazaron sus danzas para hacer de lo diverso y lo contrario una misma manera de entender el arte y la vida. Y el espíritu europeo que les da esencia y sentido, porque así bautizaron la coreografía estrenada para la ocasión: “Europa”.

Concluida la gala, miles de globos de color azul se elevaron sobre el cielo de Madrid; un cielo que, más que nunca, fue espejo del firmamento europeo.

 Two dances for Europe and a fade-out in blue.

The Swedish delegation arrived accompanied by the Nordic weather and hours earlier Madrid woke up under snow.  From early in the morning the city had been swathed in blue in readiness for the handover of the baton of the European Presidency, which Spain will hold for the next six months. As dusk fell, Madrid was lit up in Community blue and the passion for Europe it shares with the rest of the continent’s citizens began to take hold.

The main stage for the official inauguration of the Spanish Presidency was that noble temple of culture, the Teatro Real, with the King and Queen of Spain and the Prince and Princess of Asturias once again in attendance. After José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero had been sworn in as president, the venerable stage was prepared to receive the elegance and beauty of two ‘grandes dames’ of dance, Tamara Rojo and María Pagés. And the choreography of their Spanish and European dance became universal.

The evening began with the ethnic and organic movement of the dancer from Seville, raising flamenco dance to the highest level of cultural expression. Her ‘Sol Soleá’ gave way to the sophisticated and atmospheric movement of the dancer who is now the principal dancer of the London Royal Ballet, who, with hands and feet, quoted Bizet and Petit, by performing the opera ‘Carmen’ along with Lienz Chang, principal dancer of the Cuba National Ballet.

The midpoint of the recital was framed between a flamenco percussion piece and ‘Seguiriya de la amargura’ from the María Pagés Company, which was another display of beauty and bare emotion. And then Tamara Rojo appeared along with the dancer, Romel Frómeta, to certify, dancing ‘Don Quijote’ by Marius Petipa, that, even if it appeared godlike, that beauty was flesh and bone.

The emotional temperature of the Teatro Real rose in degrees from the stalls and, outside, the city awaited an even more exciting finale. The Spanish National Choir performed the first few notes of the European anthem and, on stage, Tamaro Rojo and María Pagés combined their dance forms to turn something diverse and contrary into a single way of understanding art and life. And it is the European spirit which gives them essence and meaning, since that is how they christened the choreography which they devised especially for the occasion: ‘Europe’.

Once the gala had ended, thousands of blue balloons were released into the Madrid sky; a sky which, more than ever, was a mirror of the European firmament.

La danza posee la universalidad de su lenguaje destrabado y comprensible, que hace posible que los sentimientos viajen sin pasaporte. No siempre, sin embargo, hablan los artistas el mismo idioma, y muchos esperanzadores encuentros se quedan en simples intentos de comunicación. No es el caso de «Dunas», un trabajo que lleva la firma conjunta de María Pagés -singular y fascinante creadora de nuestro flamenco- y Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, uno de los nombres de referencia de la joven danza contemporánea europea. Ambos han trenzado su indiscutible arte para lograr una pieza magnética, donde cada uno de los dos mantiene su personalidad para retratarse en un paisaje común.

«Dunas» es una pieza de una extraordinaria belleza, una catarata de imágenes y sonidos que envuelven al espectador. El diccionario de la RAE define la belleza como «propiedad de las cosas que hace amarlas, infundiendo en nosotros deleite espiritual». Y eso es, precisamente, lo que consiguen María Pagés y Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui con un trabajo acariciador y magnético. Los dos artistas han encontrado un espacio común en el que expresarse con naturalidad sin chocar con el otro. Hay entre los dos una admiración y un respeto mutuo que se transparenta en escena; también su enorme clase y elegancia como intérpretes y como creadores, su desbordante imaginación. El espectáculo presenta momentos impagables, como cuando Cherkaoui dibuja sobre una pantalla de arena que se proyecta en uno de los telones y prolonga en incontables trazos el baile de María. Los dos son instrumentos afinados con el mismo diapasón, magníficos bailarines, coreógrafos deslumbrantes… Y «Dunas» el encuentro feliz de dos lenguajes que buscan el idioma común de la belleza.

Si hagués de resumir en poques paraules l´espectacle de dansa Dunas ho faria dient en veu alta: emoció de tanta bellesa artística sobre l´escenari. L´espectacle que van oferir dimecres a la nit al Teatre Municipal de Girona María Pagés i Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui va transmetre un missatge molt clar: la capacitat excel•lent d´aconseguir unir diferents estils i tècniques de dansa.

La majoria del mèrit és de la ballarina i coreògrafa de flamenc María Pagés i del coreògraf i ballarí de dansa contemporània Sidi Larbi, que van interpretar amb una excel•lent expressió corporal i moviment la fusió entre dos cossos, el dels ballarins, i a la vegada dos estils de dansa diferents com són el flamenc i la dansa contemporània. Tot i ser dues modalitats de dansa amb tècniques molt diverses tenen una cosa en comú, i és que tant un estil com l´altre juguen molt amb el moviment del cos.

Els ballarins no només van interpretar peces de dansa acompanyades de la música matisada amb ecos flamencs, clàssics i àrabs, sinó que van abocar el públic a una altra dimensió, la de les Dunes, inspirada en la sorra i les seves metamorfosis però interpretada amb dues figures humanes. Dues grans teles com a únic decorat van permetre als dos ballarins posar en escena l´exploració del «desert» interpretant diverses coreografies i a la vegada un joc escènic amb el moviment «de les dunes» de roba. El treball cos a cos i d´interacció home-dona en el ball es va plasmar al llarg de tota l´obra i l´espectador va poder veure aquest contacte humà mitjançant l´art de la interpretació de la dansa.

L´espectacle va començar amb una melodia suau al piano on els ballarins es retrobaven creant una «duna»; al llarg de l´obra la música i el ball es van anar intensificant amb sons flamencs i aràbics arribant al clímax de l´obra, on van fer dues interpretacions individuals.

El final de l´obra va ser el més sorprenent. Els intèrprets van escenificar com a punt final una coreografia com la de l´inici de l´espectacle però amb la diferència que la «duna» desapareix quan les teles de roba que penjaven damunt l´escenari cauen damunt dels dos ballarins a terra. Una manera de finalitzar l´obra que va sorprendre el públic i que es va entregar dempeus aplaudint els dos ballarins.

En tot cas, no es pot obviar la música en directe dels diferents músics que es trobaven situats als laterals de l´escenari i que van donar color i llum a tota l´obra; els ballarins van saber coordinar i interpretar cada so i melodia musical amb moviments corporals molt expressius.

I’ll be taking Larbi by the hand to meet his essence, his own genuine roots. These, and other ingredients, make up his fabulous world.”
Maria Pagés (National Award for Dance) spoke in this way of her meeting with the Belgian choreographer, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Best Choreographer 2008) before setting to work on the creation of Dunas.
These two stars of modern dance unite Flamenco and Contemporary Dance in this performance – opening in October at the Dan:s Festival, Singapore – creating a choreography born of their mutual admiration for each other.
The music composed by Szymon Brzoska and Rubén Lebaniegos for the show, with touches of Flamenco, classic and Arabic music, represent the roots of both choreographers. The result is a deeply innovative performance, about which Sidi Larbi reflects: “Meeting Maria has been like meeting a current of passionate and positive energy; she is extraordinarily open and able to see the quality of the movements in an unique way. Far from the conventionalisms of contemporary choreography. I love the way she moves, her way of totally committing herself to her full emotional expressivity; she delivers herself in heart and soul onstage, I have never seen such powerful dedication before – she makes the stage completely hers. Her style redefined my way of looking at movement and sharing the stage with her has been an honour and a great apprenticeship for me.”
About the Company

Maria Pagés, the Flamenco dancer and choreographer from Seville, has conquered stages around the world with numbers that go farther than just exhibiting cultural differences, opening up a path for Flamenco dance. She was part of the Antonio Gades Dance Company and has been first dancer in both Mario Maya’s and Rafael Aguilar’s Companies. She took part in movies, such as Carmen and Flamenco directed by Carlos Saura. In 2007, Mikhail Baryshnikov invited her to dance at the Baryshnikov Dance Centre. This project included a residency in BAC. This experience inspired Maria for her show Autorretrato (Self Portrait). She has won awards such as the National Prize for Dance (Creation) in 2002, the ADE Prize for Choreography in 1996 and five Giraldillo Prizes in the Seville Flamenco Art Biennial.
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Antwerp, Belgium, 1976) is one of the most prolific choreographers and dancers in Belgium. His work is characterised by his unprejudiced openness to all cultures, languages and forms of expressivity, which has given rise to intensely personal creations. He has created dances such as Rien de Rien (Cherkaoui’s first choreography as a member of the C de la B Ballet), Ook, It, D’Avant, Foi, Tempus Figit, Ik hou Van Jou/Je T’Aime Tu Sais, Corpus Bach,Mea Culpa, Myth, L’Homme de Bois, Apocrifu, Origine, Sutra and BABEL. He was awarded the Special Prize in the BITEF Belgrade Festival and the Revelation Prize for Choreographers in the Nijinski Prizes in Monte Carlo, amongst many others.
